Hand Veins

FAQ For Treating Hand Veins

Leg Vein
Q. What are hand veins?

A. Hand veins refer to the surface veins that are visible on the top of your hand. As we age there is a natural thinning that takes place on your skin. Because of this hand veins become more visible as we age.

Q. What causes unsightly hand veins?

A. In most cases, unsightly hand veins are healthy and not diseased, as in the case of varicose veins in the leg. The most typical cause of unwanted hand veins is the thinning of skin and subcutaneous tissue that comes with age. Without that youthful cushioning, the veins begin to appear more obvious and bulge.

Q. Why remove hand veins?

A. The removal of hand veins is purely a cosmetic procedure. The saying goes, you can always tell a womans true age not by looking at her face, but at her hands. Removing unsightly, bulging hand veins benefits those wishing to regain that soft, youthful appearance. It restores confidence in women who have developed unattractive veins on their hands and have become self-conscious.

Q. Does insurance cover the cost of the procedure?

A. Because the removal of hand veins is considered a cosmetic procedure, it is not normally covered by insurance companies.

Q. Is the procedure painful?

A. Most patients report little to no pain during the procedure. Local anesthesia is used to minimize any discomfort while treating the hand veins.

Q. Will the blood circulation in the hand be compromised if unsightly veins are removed?

A. There are many more blood vessels in the deeper layers of the hand that provide adequate blood flow. The bulging hand veins are superficial and not required for normal circulation.

Q. What are the side effects and/or risks of treating my hand veins?

A. Generally the discomfort associated with the hand vein procedure is minimal. There might be slight bruising, swelling, and/or pain that is usually resolved quickly.

Q. How are hand veins treated?

A. Dr. Fox offers sclerotherapy and micro-phlebectomy for the treatment of unwanted hand veins.

Q. Will my insurance pay for my initial hand vein consultation?

A. There is an initial office visit charge for your hand veins consultation with the surgeon. The cost of this consultation will generally be covered by insurance. If insurance does not cover your consultation with Dr. Fox, then the cost of the consultation will be deducted from the cost of the procedure.

Q. What is the cost for hand vein treatment?

A. The fee for treatment of unwanted hand veins is $3,000 per hand. This includes all follow-up visits and “touch-up” treatments for three months.

Q. How long does the hand vein treatment last?

A. The results from the hand vein treatment are permanent. Unlike varicose veins in the leg, unwanted hand veins are not abnormal veins, thus the likelihood of new veins developing in your hands is very low.
